Sentencing for Attempted Bank Robberies

A Houghton County teen will not have to go to jail for his role in two separate bank robbery attempts last fall.

Paden Rothenberger of Atlantic Mine was sentenced today.

He received 12 months in the county jail, 3 years of probation and a restitution obligation.

Rothenberger pleaded guilty in January to charges stemming from an attempted ATM break–in at the Miners State Bank in South Range.

Rothenberger was also said to have broken into an equipment store in Hancock and tried to rob the Superior National Bank in Chassell.

His charges were reduced to breaking and entering with intent and attempted safe breaking as part of a plea deal.

Rothenberger’s co-defendant from the ATM break-in, Gordon Lewis of Dollar Bay, pleaded guilty earlier this month to attempted safecracking and attempted larceny in a building.

He’ll be sentenced on April 16th.
