Second half costs NMU against Winona State

MARQUETTE –The Northern Michigan University soccer team held No. 23 Winona State scoreless through the first period, but Winona State scored four in the second half to pick up a 4-1 win Sunday at the NMU Soccer Field.

The loss drops NMU to 0-2-0 on the season while Winona State picked up their second win of the season improving to 2-0-0.

In the first half, Winona State had an advantage in shots 12-3 over the Wildcats including taking six shots on goal to NMU’s one. Taylor Zehren led all players with three shots including two on goal for Winona State. NMU senior defender Kim Rietveld, senior forward Taylor Smith  and junior defender Hailey Beyrand each recorded first half shots for the Wildcats.

Sophomore goal keeper Caroline Glantz played the first 45-minutes in net for NMU recording six saves.

Cailyn McCauley broke the scoreless tie for the Warriors in the 48th minute (47:07) when she took a feed off Nicole Sames and Kati Baker about five yards out off a corner kick. Meghan Bolton then scored an unassisted goal in the 49th minute (48:59) giving Winona State a 2-0 advantage.

Shauna Rodman gave Winona State a 3-0 advantage when she scored a goal on an assist from Darian Molter in the 66th minute (65:05).

The Wildcats got on the board when freshman midfielder Abbie Cook and sent the ball into the far corner of the net in the 76th minute (75:59).

Winona State’s final goal of the contest came off an own goal in the final minute of action (89:01).

Glantz made nine saves in goal for the Wildcats playing 63:38 while sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons made one save playing 26:22 in relief. Rachel Oleson took the win for the Warriors playing the full 90-minutes in net, making four saves.

WSU outshot NMU 22-8 and finished the game with a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Rietveld and Smith led NMU with two shots each.

NMU returns to action at 5 p.m. Sept. 12 when they host Minnesota-Duluth.
