Salad Spree gives hungry Marquette residents a taste of spring

Dozens of hungry people gathered at a Marquette church today for a much-needed taste of springtime.

First United Methodist Church hosted its annual Spring Salad Spree. The church has held the luncheon on the last Thursday of April every year since 1978. Many of the recipes that people can taste can be found in the church’s very own cookbook.

“Lots of fun salads, vegetables, fruit salads, everything,” Salad Spree chairwoman Beth Gruber said. “Members of the church make salads and rolls and bring them in, and it’s served pot–luck style, so it’s all you can eat.”

The proceeds from the lunch support Soaring Eagle Ministries, which sends mission trips to Haiti, and No More Malaria, a nonprofit group trying to eradicate its namesake disease in Africa. Room At The Inn, the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity also receive money from the Salad Spree.
