Rochester wins UPLGA Tournament

Marquette native Avery Rochester won the 87th annual Upper Peninsula Ladies Golf Association Tournament, defeating Carley Saint-Onge of Marquette, 5&3.

Rochester has now won the tournament in back-to-back years.

The 17-year-old Rochester won the 15th hole outright in match play to win the championship. With the win, Rochester becomes the first repeat champion since Syd Wells from Menominee won the title three straight times (2008-10).

“It’s a great honor to be able to play in this (tournament) and play with the other ladies in the U.P. Its really fun and its a good competition,” said Rochester.

Rochester will continue to play golf at the collegiate level. She has a scholarship to play at Columbia College in Missouri starting this fall.

Earlier in the day, Rochester defeated Nancy Osier 4&2 in the semifinals. Saint-Onge defeated Zoe Woodworth 2&1 in the other semifinal matchup.
