Road Commission Dissolution Bill

A bill that would have given counties the option of dissolving their road commissions is now shouldered.

State Representative Matt Huuki said he had been in discussion with Houghton County Road Engineer Kevin Harju about the effect such a bill would have on less populated areas.

Funds set aside for the road commission would have been turned over to the state and then re-allocated based on a criteria set by Lansing.

Areas with higher populations and more commercial traffic would get the lion’s share of the money.

Huuki said the County Road Commissions were created by a vote of the people and could not be legally dissolved by a vote of a committee.
