Retired Marquette Police Chief Dies

The longest-serving police chief Marquette has ever had is dead.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department says retired former Chief George Johnson had been in poor health recently.

They also say he had a medical emergency yesterday afternoon at his home in Big Bay.

His wife called 911 a little after 1pm.

Johnson was pronounced dead at Marquette General Hospital.

He worked for the Marquette City Police for 40 years, spending more than 30 of them as chief until he retired in 1995.

Johnson was 77 years old.

Sheriff’s deputies are continuing to look into his death.
