Responsible drinking reminders
December 17, 2012 – As office holiday parties and family gatherings are getting underway across the state, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) is reminding legal purchase age adults who choose to enjoy a drink to do so safely this holiday season. Alcohol can be enjoyed responsibly by the vast majority of legal-age adults; some individuals over-consume, abuse or choose to consume it before they are of legal age and can be harmful to themselves and others.
If you are hosting a holiday party, designate a bartender to keep track of serving guests or checking IDs. All too often, home is also a teen’s source of alcohol.
“With older siblings home from college or visiting family in town for the holidays, it is even more tempting and easier for kids to obtain and consume alcohol,” said MLCC Chairman Andy Deloney. “The earlier drinking starts, the more danger it poses.”
Another thing you can do as a host is offer a ride home from someone that has not been drinking. According to AAA, more than 500,000 people are injured in alcohol-related crashes every year — with over 12,000 resulting in death. AAA urges all motorists not to drink and drive.
- Never ride in a car with someone who is intoxicated.

- Immediately report impaired drivers to area law enforcement.
- Use the designated driver system.
“Michigan has tough laws and severe penalties for those who drink and drive. One of the greatest gifts you can give to others is to volunteer as a designated driver during the holiday party season or ensuring that partygoers have a safe ride home. Let’s keep everyone safe this holiday season and drink responsibly,” said Deloney.
