Reduced Hours Plan for Rural Post Offices

The U.S. Postal Service is working on ways to cut its budget while avoiding post office closures.

But its latest idea will mean fewer hours for many U.P. post offices.

The Postal Service has released what it calls a preservation plan for the country’s smallest post offices.

The plan includes reduced hours for the retail windows at more than 80 post offices in the U.P.

Most of the affected offices would have their window hours cut to four per day by September 2014.

Sabrina Todd, Michigan public relations coordinator for the USPS, says when the organization announced post office closures last year, public feedback told them it would be best to avoid closures any way possible.

She says this should be a good compromise that will allow communities to keep their post offices operating while savings the USPS substantial money.

The Postal Service would save $500 million a year under the preservation plan.
