Redmen want to bounce back after rough 2015

MARQUETTE — The Redmen football team wants to forget about last season as they look to bounce back this upcoming year.

Marquette wrapped up their first week of practice on Friday with a full–pads situational scrimmage. It isn’t full contact yet, but the team is glad to have one week in the books.

“Well obviously, there’s a lot more contact. It’s a lot more intense because it’s more like real football when you get all the pads on. We’re feeling good. We’re experienced on the line. We’re a little inexperienced in the backfield, but I think kids are ready to step up so we’re feeling good about the season,” said senior running back Alex Duvall.

“It’s been a grind. It’s good to be back. I’ve got some pretty good friends on the team so it’s good to be back hanging out with them. The grind is real,” senior tackle Travis Christensen said.

“We’re working hard. They’re really sharp on their assignments. Of course you’re going to make a few mistakes in that first week. But the guys did a great job responding and learning from those mistakes, getting them corrected and really came through well in that first week,” said head coach David L’Huillier.

Marquette went 3–5 last season and have to deal with the loss of a very strong senior class which included future Northern Michigan Wildcat Scott Tripp. But that doesn’t phase this team, which had previously made it to the playoffs five straight years.

“The biggest thing is for us to be consistent. We got to work hard on getting ourselves better every single day. We’re not really looking at the big picture. Right now, we’re just trying to work on getting better every single rep, get better every single play and then everything else after that will take care of itself,” L’Huillier said.

Marquette opens the season at home on August 26th against Traverse City Saint Francis.
