Prostest at Father Marquette Middle School

An area middle school student, his family and others were picketing outside a catholic school this morning and this afternoon.

They were protesting what they claim was discrimination by the Diocese of Marquette.

But diocese officials say that’s not the case at all.

Last summer, 13–year–old Andrew Valenti of Ishpeming was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome.

He and his mother say that the Diocese of Marquette essentially kicked him out of Father Marquette Middle School because of that diagnosis.

The diocese superintendent of schools says Andrew wasn’t expelled.

And he says it was clear that Andrew’s unique needs were not being met, in spite of a full–time special ed teacher being there.

Salisbury says Andrew’s parents withdrew him from the school voluntarily at that point.

There’s no word on whether or not any legal action has been taken.

After his departure from father Marquette, Andrew is now attending North Star Academy in Marquette Township.
