Police warn residents of IRS phone scam

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an IRS phone scam in the area regarding the payment of “bad taxes”.

Police say the caller may state that he or she is an agent with the IRS and  requests a certain amount of money to be paid with a money order.  The victim may also receive a “spoofed” call at the same time, from a person claiming to be with a local law enforcement agency and there is a warrant out for his or her arrest.

Police say a “spoofed” call will show up on caller ID as any number the “spoofer” selects.

The phone number used in the most recent scamming incident was (202) 241-6439.

Police want to remind residents that the IRS will not contact a citizen regarding the payment of “bad taxes”, and if you receive a call, immediately hang up.
