WATERSMEET — Police in the western Upper Peninsula are searching for a missing Illinois man.

The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office says the 71-year-old man from Homer Glen, Ill. was reported overdue by staff at a hotel in Land O’Lakes, Wisc. around 9:30 p.m. on October 11th. It was found that the missing man frequents areas in Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties during the fall color season, and those areas as well as parts of Vilas County, Wisc. were checked for the individual and his vehicle.

Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police located the missing man’s car on Wednesday in a parking lot near Imp Lake just east of Watersmeet. Tribal Police and Sheriff’s Deputies searched both land and water in the Imp Lake area. A more extensive search of that area began at dawn Thursday morning, including assistance from the canine unit of the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post.

Agencies participating in the search also include the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Gogebic County Search and Rescue Team.

Police say more information will be released as it becomes available.
