Police respond to four stranded individuals

ALGER COUNTY — Around 4:15 a.m. the Alger County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call from 4 individuals who said they were stranded on a snowmobile trail near the Grand Marais Airport and said they were freezing.

A trail groomer and National Park Ranger located the group, including a female who had sustained a knee injury. The group had attempted to drive a pickup along trail 443, before getting stuck roughly five miles South of Grand Marais. Multiple attempts to build fires failed and they said they were getting cold.

All four were rescued and returned to safety.

It included Matthew Maynard and Keith Avery from Grand Marais along with Stephanie Maynard from Manistique and Tyler Franz from Escanaba.
