Police investigating alleged forced entry at UPAWS

NEGAUNEE — Police are investigating a forced entry at a beloved humane society.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police – Negaunee Post are investigating a forced entry at the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter located on Snowfield Road in Negaunee Township.

“Around 8:30 or so this morning our staff arrived take care of the critters,” said UPAWS Supervisor Kim Randolph, “and get everything cleaned up. When we showed up we noticed that the door had been broken into. Of course we were very concerned.”

The time of entry has been narrowed between 6 p.m. Wednesday evening through 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning. Some of the animals were reported as scared, but fortunately they were all accounted for.

“When we came in we looked everywhere. There seems to be to be nothing stolen, there was no damage, there wasn’t a big mess or anything like that. Just somebody had breached our safe place for the animals. We’re very worried, concerned, and would like to make sure that the animals continue to stay safe.”

UPAWS workers added that any tracks that had been made outside of the building were snow covered upon their arrival. It is unknown at this time how many people are responsible for the break in. A worker from Wolverine Door Service confirmed that the door has been re–secured.

Anyone who has information regarding the incident is asked to call the Michigan State Police – Negaunee Post at (906)475–9922.
