Petition for second ballot to ban wolf hunt approved

The effort continues to get the issue of a wolf hunt before voters.

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved petition language for a second ballot proposal to ban wolf hunting on Friday.  The proposal seeks to overturn a law passed in May that allows the Natural Resources Commission to decide what animals can be hunted.

The NRC voted Thursday to allow a fall hunt in three areas of the U.P.

The group behind the proposal – Keep Michigan Wolves Protected – now has to gather 225,000 voter signatures to get the issue on the ballot.

If that happens, there will be two wolf–hunt related questions on the November 2014 ballot.  The other referendum seeks to overturn Public Act 520 of 2012, which classified wolves as a game animal in Michigan.
