Pelkie Elementary scheduled to close

BARAGA — After much discussion, Pelkie Elementary School will close at the end of the school year.

The Board of Education of the Baraga Area Schools officially decided Monday to close the school. The district had been considering the issue for some time. Low enrollment numbers and budget issues led the school board to that decision.

Many parents objected to the idea. They worried that if it closed, students would have to get up as early as 5:30 a.m. to get on a bus for the day. Parents were also concerned that the building would fall into disrepair if it were abandoned.
