GWINN — High school students in Gwinn are gearing up for a big event to help raise community awareness about suicide.

The third annual P.S. I Love You Suicide Prevention Walk, organized by the Gwinn Teen Clinic’s Youth Advisory Council, kicks off on Saturday. The 3K walk through Gwinn is part of a campaign designed to let students and the community know that someone is there to help in times of need.

“Our P.S. I Love You walk is to raise awareness [of] suicide and to celebrate that everyone is loved, needed, and important,” said Youth Advisory Council Secretary Danielle Wiertella.

“We’re just hoping to bring some awareness to suicide and depression and show people that they’re not alone and that there’s people here to support them,” said Tasha Rzanca, a Youth Advisory Council member.

The group’s messages of inspiration aren’t limited to the walk. They hold monthly events to help remind students that they are not alone.

“The second Tuesday of every month we hold ‘P.S. I Love You’ day here at school,” said Wiertella, “and we hang notes like this up on the lockers in the high school and middle school here at Gwinn, and on the back of the purple P.S. I Love You notes, we have quotes such as ‘happiness can be found even in the darkest of places,’ and ‘Don’t be afraid. Ask for help. Someone will always be there.'”

Registration begins at the Gwinn High School at 9:00 Saturday morning, and the walk starts at 10:00. A student–designed t–shirt will be for sale at the event. Ishpeming basketball coach Jeff Olson will be the special guest speaker this year.
