Online Competition for "Room at the Inn"

Room at The Inn, a grassroots community ministry serving the homeless in Marquette and the surrounding area, has been nominated for Catholic Extension’s 2012 Lumen Christi Award. The award honors individuals and groups who share the light of Christ with their diocese and community. The award is accompanied by a $50,000 grant ($25,000 for the honoree and $25,000 for the nominating diocese) to be used for enhancing a specific area of ministry.

The Catholic Diocese of Marquette invites people to support the Room at the Inn nomination by voting on the Catholic Extension Facebook page by April 13. Visit the Catholic Extension website at www.CatholicExtension.org and click on “2012 Lumen Christi Awards” to view all entries. Scroll down to find “Room at the Inn” and click on “Vote for this Nominee” to go to the Facebook voting page. Facebook is the only way to vote at this time, and it is just one of several factors considered in determining award finalists.

Room at the Inn began under the umbrella of Catholic Social Services in 2006 and quickly grew into an ecumenical ministry. Room at the Inn is an emergency night shelter for adults that moves weekly to one of the 13 different hosting churches in Marquette. Staffed by one social worker and assisted by approximately 1,000 trained volunteers, the shelter meets more than just physical needs. The shelter guests are welcomed with kindness, treated with respect and experience true Christian love in action.

Each year, Catholic Extension’s Lumen Christi Award honors an individual or organization in one of America’s mission Catholic dioceses who demonstrates how the power of faith can transform lives and communities. Lumen Christi recipients inspire those around them to be “Lights of Christ” as well. The Lumen Christi Award is accompanied by a $50,000 grant – $25,000 for the honoree and $25,000 for the nominating diocese – to be used for enhancing a specific area of ministry.

Catholic Extension uniquely contributes to the growth and vibrancy of the Church in the U.S. by strategically investing in under-resourced Catholic communities to unleash the power of faith that transforms hearts, lives and society. For more information, visit www.catholicextension.org.
