One dead after vehicle-pedestrian accident on US-2

MANISTIQUE TOWNSHIP — An accident on US–2 over the weekend resulted in the death of a Manistique woman.

Michigan State Police Troopers from the St. Ignace post were called to the scene near Walters Road in Manistique Township on Saturday around 3:00 p.m. 51-year-old Leigh Peterson was struck in traffic while walking by a 49 year old man from Cornell. She was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident resulted in the closure of US-2 one mile east of the city of Manistique for a number of hours. Responders cleared the scene and the highway was reopened by 8:15 p.m. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Michigan State Police troopers were assisted at the scene by Manistique Public Safety, the Department of Natural Resources, Sault Tribe Police Department, the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Manistique Department of Public Works, and off-duty Schoolcraft County Deputies.
