Police have released the names of the people involved in the fatal two-car accident Wednesday night in the city of Ishpeming.

The Ishpeming Police Department says 81-year-old Peter Ruokola of Ishpeming and 72-year-old Karen Basto, also of Ishpeming, both died in the accident.

Just after 6:00 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of US-41 and Lakeshore Drive. A 2004 Chevrolet car, driven by Ruokola, attempted to turn onto Lakeshore Drive from US-41. He pulled into the path of a 2005 Chrysler van driven by 70-year-old Allen Basto of Ishpeming. Basto’s vehicle did have the right of way.

Allen Basto was taken to U.P. Health System – Marquette for treatment of his injuries. Karen Basto was also transported to U.P. Health System – Marquette, where she died of her injuries. Ruokola was pronounced dead at U.P. Health System – Bell.

An accident reconstructionist with the Michigan State Police is assisting in the investigation.

An 81 year old Ishpeming man was driving a 2004 Chevrolet and attempted to turn off the highway onto Lakeshore drive from the west bound left turn lane. Witnesses say the man turned in front of a 2005 Chrysler van which was traveling east on US 41 and had the right of way, according to a statement provided by Ishpeming Police.

The 81 year old driver was transported to Bell Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the van, a 70 year old Ishpeming man, was transported to Marquette General Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. His wife, the passenger in the van, is a 72 year old Ishpeming woman. She was brought to Bell Hospital and later transferred to UP Health System – Marquette where she died of her injuries.

We will pass along more information as it becomes available. Police will not release names of those involved in the accident until Thursday.


The Ishpeming Police were assisted at the scene by Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, the Negaunee Police, the Ishpeming Fire Department, the Ishpeming Township Fire Department and EMS from UP Health System Bell and Marquette.
