Note from school project prompts lockdown

ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP — The Aspen Ridge Middle School was put on lockdown Monday evening after staff found a suspicious note which turned out to be part of a school project.

Deputies from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office say they responded to the situation at the school in Ishpeming Township shortly after 7:30. One of the Aspen Ridge night time staff had found a piece of paper in a classroom that had “RIP, those who died in this bombing” written on it. The staff initiated lockdown procedures and notified Marquette County Central Dispatch. No students were present at the school.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that some students were working on a group video project about the Boston Marathon bombing and trial earlier in the day. The note was found to be from that project. The Aspen Ridge nighttime staff and administration were not aware of this project.

An explosive detection K–9 was brought in from the Marquette City Police Department as a precautionary measure. After a room–to–room search, no suspicious items were detected, and the lockdown was terminated at 9:30 p.m.
