Northern students paint Janzen House for MLK Day of Service

MARQUETTE — As part of NMU’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service some students went to give back at the Janzen House.

Students covered the floors, laid our painter’s tape, armed themselves with brushes and rollers and gave a new coat of paint to the shelter’s halls.

By serving those in need students gain a better sense of the discrimination faced by many each day.

“This makes us realize that we are a part of a larger community and need to help everybody around us, and makes us step out,” said Melissa Orzechowski, a junior at NMU.

Senior Jordan Paquet said, “Students at Northern are a part of the community, but I think until they’re able to go out and do service like this they don’t get to realize exactly what is needed in our community, so this might spark that volunteerism for later projects.”

The Volunteer Center at Northern reached out to organizations in the community to determine where best to have students spend their day of service.
