Northern Michigan wide receiver talks about journey from Escanaba

MARQUETTE — Many Yoopers hope they can have the opportunity to play for their hometown team and Northern Michigan wide receiver Austin Young is living out that dream.

Young was a standout football player at Escanaba High School and now, he is one of the top receivers on the Wildcats team. He talked about if the reality of that journey has hit him yet.

“I don’t think it’s hit me yet. It just went by so fast. I’m still shocked that…I don’t know. It just hasn’t hit me I guess,” Young said.

Along with team captain Marcus Tucker, the wide receiving corp looks to be a strength for the NMU squad and wide receivers coach Marcus Knight says it’s the deepest team he’s been around for a while.

“Especially from that the standpoint that I started with these young men so I’ve had them under my tutelage for the past two or three years now. And they understand how I coach and I understand what they can bring to our program so I’m very excited. As long as we can stay healthy, we’ll be OK,” Knight said.

“I think we’re going to be spectacular. We’re older, got a lot of young kids that are even coming in and they’re learning a lot very quickly so that’s a good asset. But Coach Knight has been really keeping us under his wing and keeping us going,” said Young.

The Wildcats open the season September 5th at Northwood.
