No More Snowmobile Races at Winterfest

One of the U.P.’s most notable wintertime events is about ready to go for 2009.

But the Heikki Lunta Winterfest in Negaunee will have to make do this weekend without one of its longtime fixtures.

At least for now, it looks like last year’s 13th annual Teal Lake Radar Runs will go down as the last ones ever.

The Radar Run Committee isn’t going to be holding the event anymore.

More volunteers are apparently needed if the snowmobile drag races will ever be held in Negaunee again.

Huge crowds used to gather on Teal Lake to watch 1 sled at a time tear down a 1,000-foot groomed course.

The Radar Runs attracted about 300 riders every year.

They would come from all over the Upper Midwest, frequently including racers from Wisconsin and Minnesota besides the U.P.
