NMU’s Stewart wins event at GLIAC championships

GENEVA, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University track and field team completed its second day at the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Thursday (May 1) at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Senior Cheyenne Stewart led the way for the Wildcats, winning the long jump and setting a school record in the event. Stewart won the event with a jump of 5.91 meters.
Junior Christina Toogood placed third in the 800 and fourth in the 1,500 to qualify for the finals in both races. Junior Larissa Halonen also qualified in the 1,500 finishing in 11th in the preliminaries.
Junior Brittni Wirtzand freshman Avadon James finished sixth and eighth in the 100 meter dash to qualify for Friday’s finals. James also qualified in the 200, finishing in eighth.
Junior Olivia Howard set an NMU school record in the 10K with a time of 37:55.94 finishing in 13th place. Freshmen Shannon Flynn and Abby Roche placed in 17th and 18th, respectively in the 3,000 steeplechase with personal best times.
Senior Kellisha Harley placed in the 21st in the 100 and 26th in the 200. Sydney Schultz had a 23rd place finish in the 400. Sophomore Jaylee Brown was 19th in the 800, while junior Caitlin Keskey finished 25th.
The Wildcats continue action on Friday at the GLIAC Championships.
