NMU Women's B-Ball team hits the road

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team looks to rebound after two disappointing loses last weekend when it travels to Hillsdale (Jan. 26) and Northwood (Jan. 28) this week for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests.
The Wildcats enter the matchup at 8-9 on the season and 4-6 in the GLIAC. NMU was swept last weekend at home by Grand Valley State (51-48) and Ferris State (78-71). The ‘Cats held sizable leads at the half in both contests but fell in the final minutes of action after being outrebounded down the stretch.
Senior guard Chelsea Lyons set a new career-high in points for the second time in two weeks against FSU. The senior netted 30 points on (12-16) from the floor. Lyons averaged 25 points in the two losses. Freshman guard Alyssa Colla also grabbed a new career-high with 17 points.
The Chargers enter the contest with an identical record to match NMU at 8-9 on the season and 4-6 in the GLIAC. Hillsdale sits one sport above NMU in the overall standings in ninth place.
The ‘Cats are 27-13 all-time against the Chargers dating back to the 1975-76 season. NMU defeated Hillsdale 67-64 last season in Marquette for its third in four tries.
The Timberwolves enter Saturday’s matchup at 7-10 on the season and 2-8 in the GLIAC. Northwood has dropped eight of its last nine contests, with its last win coming against Missouri S & T back on Dec. 30.
NMU has historically dominated the all-time series at 38-13, dating back to the 1981-82 season. The ‘Cats have won three of the last four in the series including a 69-58 win last season in Midland.
Thursday’s game is part of a doubleheader, with the men’s game set to tipoff at 8 p.m. Saturday’s matinee game is scheduled for 1 p.m., with the men’s game to follow.
