NMU Women’s B-Ball team earns 1st GLIAC win over Ohio Dominican

MARQUETTE, Mich.- A strong second half offensive output was all it took
for the Northern Michigan women’s basketball team to capture its first
conference win, as the Wildcats defeated Ohio Dominican University 69-50
on Saturday (Dec. 10) at the Berry Events Center.
With the win, NMU improves to 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, while ODU falls to 5-3 and 1-3 in the GLIAC.
The Panthers started the game with an early lead and leading most of the
first half. The ‘Cats retook the lead for the first time since the 15:25
mark, with a 3-pointer from senior forward Hillary Bowling as time expired
to end the first half. NMU took a 27-24 lead into the half.
Out of the break, NMU picked up where it let off by extending its lead to
double-figures with a 3-pointer from sophomore center Annie Rubendunst at the 16:28 mark at 40-29. The ‘Cats maintained their double-digit lead
throughout the rest of the game leading by as many as 21-points and
outscoring the Panthers 42-26 in the second stanza.
The ;Cats were led by senior guard Chelsea Lyons with 17 points, four
assists and five steals. Sophomore center Annie Rubendunst netted a
career high 15 points and five rebounds while coming off of the bench.
The Panthers were led by Christina Pentaudi with 12 points and two rebounds.
NMU shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the field and 42.9 percent (9-21) from
3-point land.
The ‘Cats won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 41-26.
NMU is off for the week before traveling to Grand Valley State on Dec. 18.
