NMU women win at Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. – Northern Michigan University women’s basketball held Northwood to 13-51 (.255) shooting as the Wildcats cruised to a 65-44 win on the road. The Wildcats shot 20-42 (.476) for the game going 6-14 (.429) from beyond the arc and 19-26 (.731) from the free-throw line. Four of the NMU starters would score double-figures led by senior guard Alyssa Colla with 14 while points senior guard Lauren Gruber and senior forward Nea Makela added 13 with sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich chipping in 11.

NMU improves to 17-8 on the year with a 15-6 GLIAC record with the victory, while the Timberwolves fall to 17-10 with a 13-8 mark in conference play.

The Wildcats opened the game scoring the first seven points of the game as they went on to hold the lead for the entire game. A three-point basket from Makela capped off a 13-0 run that gave NMU a 23-5 lead with 8:03 left in the half. The Wildcats defense continued dominate as they held a 33-15 lead heading into halftime.

The Timberwolves would only manage 5-27 (.185) shooting in the half as NMU went 9-21 (.429) from the field in the half.

The Wildcats maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half building their lead to as large as 21 at 60-39 with 2:10 remaining in the game. Makela would make a layup to finish the scoring for the game at 65-44.

NMU finished the game with a 35-33 advantage in rebounds and outscoring Northwood 24-14 in the paint.

Gruber led the Wildcats on the boards with eight rebounds, four defensive and four offensive. Senior center Courtney Lemon and Gaspervich each had six defensive rebounds in the game.

Northern Michigan finishes the regular season hosting Michigan Tech Thursday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m.
