NMU women take down Panthers
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Northern Michigan University women’s basketball (6-4, 4-2 GLIAC) shot the ball well as they finished off a weekend sweep with a 63-47 win over Ohio Dominican. The Wildcats shot 22-46 (.478) from the field including 7-13 (.538) from beyond the arc. Sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich led all scorers with a game-high 17 points, while senior guards Alyssa Colla and Lauren Gruber pitched in 15 and 11, respectively.
Senior center Courtney Lemon opened the scoring with a three-point basket to give Northern Michigan a lead they would hold for the entirety of the contest. A jump shot from junior forward Nea Makela capped off a 17-8 run that gave NMU a 25-12 lead with 3:25 remaining in the first half. Gaspervich would hit a triple to finish off the first half scoring to put the halftime score at 30-19 in favor of NMU.
The Wildcats shot 11-22 (.500) from the field and 5-7 (.714) from three-point range in the opening half, while the NMU defense held Ohio Dominican to 7-29 (.241) shooting.
The Panthers came out in the second half strong with a 12-5 run cutting the deficit down to 35-31 with 14:51 left in the contest. Northern Michigan was able to flip the momentum and slowly extended their lead and were able to finish the game on a 10-2 run to set the final score at 63-47.
The Wildcats return home next weekend when they host Ashland Thursday, January 8th at 5:30 p.m. and Lake Erie Saturday, January 10th at 1 p.m.
