NMU volleyball holds intrasquad scrimmage

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team went from being one of the most experienced teams in the GLIAC to one of the youngest teams in the GLIAC.

NMU has 14 underclassmen, eight freshmen and six sophomores, on the roster. The Wildcats have no seniors on this year’s squad, so there will be a number of new faces on the floor once the regular season begins next week.

At the ‘Green vs. Gold’ scrimmage Wednesday night at Vandament Arena, the Gold team defeated the Green Team, 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-10, 15-8). Junior left-side hitter Lisa Studnicka led the way for the Gold Team with 16 kills. Freshman middle hitter Kayla Chosa had 12 kills in the match. Another freshman, Meghan Seymour, led the Gold Team with 34 assists. Junior Alex Berger came through defensively with 20 digs.

For the Green Team, Sophomore Meghan Crane had a team high 10 kills. Houghton native Blaire Zenner, a redshirt freshman, had five kills and two blocks for her team. The Wildcats- Stacy Kalsbeek (10), Megan Dahl (11), and Meghan Supple (11), all had double-digit digs for the Green Team. Each squad finished the match with nine blocks.

NMU begins the regular season next week at home on Thursday, Sept. 4 against Minnesota-Duluth at 7 p.m.
