NMU Swim Team wings big at home

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University swimming and diving team hosted its second meet of the season against University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from the P.E.I.F. Pool on Saturday (Nov. 3). The ‘Cats took the competition, 165-78.

NMU took 12-out-of-13 events for the morning, sweeping all three places in three events. Sophomores Deborah Lawrence, Emily Brennan and Aspen McHugh finished at the top in the 200-yard freestyle. Senior Lauren Cockles won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25:31, while junior Meghan Cepela (26.37) and sophomore Pamela Johnson (26.50) were right behind. Sophomore Madisen Sechena placed first 400-yard IM with sophomore Jordan Iverson and freshman Caitlyn Brenden in second and third, respectively.

Molly Kearny took both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The 400-yard medley relay team of sophomore Emily Bourguignon, senior Olga Budiansky, freshman Crystal Bennet and McHugh placed first with a time of 4:05.27. Sophomores Tara Dowling and Dakota Sechena finished in the top two places of the 1,000 freestyle.

Other first place finishes included: Bourguignon in the 100 backstroke, Dowling in the 500 freestyle and Lawrence in the 100 butterfly. Bennet finished with two additional first places, one in the 100 freestyle and the other in the 100 breaststroke.

The ‘Cats will travel to Stevens Point, Wis. for the Border War Invite on Friday (Nov. 9) and Saturday (Nov. 10). Competition on Friday will begin at 5 p.m., with Saturday’s starting at 10 a.m.
