Valentine’s Day is certainly about some of the finer things in life, but Northern Michigan University students showed today that the list of those finer things doesn’t end with chocolates and roses.

NMU cosmetology and culinary arts students got together for what they called the Valentine’s Day Pamper Party. The two programs will split half of the money they raised. They’ll donate the other half to the Room at the Inn homeless shelter program.

“This is the first time we’ve ever done this with the cosmetology club,” Pamper Party organizer Anna Dravland said. “We’re really hoping that we can do it every year. Both of the clubs really embraced it and went all out to make sure it’s a success, and we sold out.”

Tickets cost $20 and were only sold in advance. Each ticket was good for a manicure and pedicure from the cosmetology students, and delicious drinks and treats from the culinary students.

“Anna came over; she was the one who had the idea for this event,” NMU cosmetology student Miranda Sliger said. “(She) asked if we wanted to participate in it, and we jumped all over it. We were like, ‘yes, of course!’”

There was also a prize raffle for spa services and jewelry. The Pamper Party raised more than $1,300.
