NMU Students Camp Out for Homelessness Awareness

Dozens of Northern Michigan University students may have been a bit groggy as they made their way to the classroom today.

They were sleeping outdoors last night and this morning to call attention to homelessness.

NMU’s College Democrats hosted the hidden city sleep–out.

Students camped out on the Academic Mall in cardboard homes that they built last night.

The event calls attention to the conditions homeless residents have to contend with every day.

Kaylee Place of NMU College Democrats says the program seems to have accomplished its goal, as just about every student walking in the mall since last night asked one of the student groups what they were doing and why.

The students brought cash or food donations for the Marquette St. Vincent de Paul society.

Even though they were supposed to try to sleep outside, many of them pulled an all–nighter instead.

Place says she and many other students stayed up by a bonfire until 6am before finally getting some shut-eye.
