MARQUETTE — Northern Michigan University is facing budget cuts not just in one particular department, but across campus.

The university projected an enrollment decline of 300-350 students for the fall semester. After the students were added up, NMU has 4o0 fewer students attending the university this fall compared to a year ago.

NMU Assistant Vice President of University Marketing and Communications Derek Hall told ABC 10 today that the university is facing a budget shortfall of $2.8 million.

“We’re do different than many schools across the country,” said Hall. “There’s schools in the state going through the same thing we are. It’s not the top administration making these decisions. It’s department heads working with their faculty and the deans when it comes to classes, course loads, and things like that.”

Despite the shortfall in students this fall, Hall says NMU is retaining more students these days. Hall added that the spring semester graduation had close to a record number of students.
