NMU Nordic ski teams win freestyle events

DULUTH, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams both finished first in the freestyle events at Saturday’s College of St. Scholastica’s Christmas Classic. The women scored 24 points in the freestyle followed by CSS and Michigan Tech with nine points each. The men scored 23 points followed by CSS with 14 and MTU, seven.

On the women’s side, the Wildcats swept the top three spots. Junior Jordyn Ross won the 10-kilometer race in 40:47.  Freshman Mary Kate Cirelli was two seconds back in second place while junior Rosie Frankowski three seconds behind Cirelli.

Freshman Hannah Boyer, junior Karmen Whitham and sophomore Elizabeth Simak finished in spots nine, 10 and 11.

Junior Erik Soderman won the men’s 10K in 33:45. Junior George Cartwright was second, trailing Soderman by seven ticks. Sophomore Kyle Bratrud also scored for the ‘Cats in fourth.

Also racing for the Green and Gold was senior Chris Bowler in seventh and junior Ben Hugus in 11th.

The teams race in the classic events on Sunday. The women will race a 5K with the men skiing 10K.
