NMU men’s hoops making positive strides

MARQUETTE – The Northern University Michigan men’s basketball team exercised a few demons Monday night in Houghton, winning a game at the Student Development Center against Michigan Tech for the first time since 2010.

A big reason why the ‘Cats are winning games as of late has been the play of forward Chavis Mattison. The GLIAC Player of the Week recorded this third straight double-double last night. NMU head coach Bill Sall said that Mattison is playing with a lot of confidence right now and he is performing like a senior should be performing.

“He just wants it so bad for his team and for himself,” said Sall about Mattison. “He’s seeing the floor, making shots, and the rebounding is what’s incredible. Three consecutive games of double rebounding efforts is outstanding especially with someone who’s about 6’4”.

“I’ve just been playing all out, going all out for these last games,” said Mattison with a smile on his face. “I’m trying to get my team to the next journey. As a senior, I just had to play like a senior. Just having talks with my coaches and having a lot of meetings, figuring out that I just had to pick it up.”

NMU hits the road later this week, with games at Grand Valley and Ferris State on Thursday and Saturday.
