NMU Men’s Hoops fall at Ferris

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team fell in its second straight game on Saturday (Jan. 12) from Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris State University defeated NMU 51-41 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup.

The Bulldogs (8-6; 7-3 GLIAC) went on a 7-0 run in the first five minutes of the game before the ‘Cats were able to get on the board. From there, NMU scored seven consecutive points of its own to tie the game at seven. NMU tied the game again with ten minutes to go in the half, and would then lead for the remainder of the half giving the ‘Cats the 24-21 halftime advantage.

Northern (4-10; 3-7 GLIAC) was the first on the board to open the second half on a three pointer by Junior forward Matthew Craggs to extend the lead by six (27-21). NMU continued its lead until 7:41 remaining in the game when the Bulldogs took 37-36 advantage. FSU led for the rest of the game, leading by as many as 11 with just under a minute to go.

Sophomore guard Quinten Calloway had 13 total points for the ‘Cats on one three pointer, four field goals and went 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Craggs closed out the double digits with 10 points scoring two shots from beyond the arc and two additional field goals. Craggs contributed ten boards to lead all rebounders.

NMU committed 15 turnovers to FSU’s 11, but were able to out rebound the Bulldogs 32-29. Ferris shot 15-for-41 on the afternoon and were 18-for-25 from the free throw line, while the ‘Cats were 15-for-46 overall and 5-for-6 at the free throw line.

Drew Lehman led all scorers with 15 points after scoring one three pointer, four field goals and was 4-for-6 at the free throw line. Daniel Sutherlin added 13 points and led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds, five on defense.

The ‘Cats will return home on Thursday (Jan. 17) to matchup against Saginaw Valley State at 5:30 p.m. and Wayne State University on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 11 a.m.
