NMU Men’s B-Ball looks for rebound in 2013

MARQUETTE, Mich. – After playing in its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday (Dec. 30), the Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team returns home this weekend for two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference games. Ashland University will come to town on Thursday (Jan. 3) with tip-off at 5:30 p.m., and NMU will take on Lake Erie College on Saturday (Jan. 5) at 1 p.m.

The ‘Cats fell 64-45 at Lewis University on Sunday to fall to 2-8 on the season overall and 1-5 in the GLIAC. Junior forward Matthew Craggs leads in scoring for NMU with an average of 14.7 per game, and Junior forward Scooter Johnson averages 10.9. On the boards, Sophomore forward Kendall Jackson leads with a 6.5 average, while Craggs (5.7) and Johnson (5.3) are right behind.

Ashland sits at 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the GLIAC after defeating Ohio Christian, 95-63 on Saturday (Dec. 29) in a non-conference game from Ashland, Ohio. The Eagles are led by Evan Yates with an average of 15.9 points per game in nine games. Yates also has the advantage in rebounds with a 10.3 average.

Lake Erie (4-5 and 1-4 GLIAC) broke its four game losing streak on Dec. 19 by defeating Northwood University, 58-56. The Storm have three plays averaging double figures per game, led by Rich Austin with 13.4, while Riley Thomas (12.9 points) and Jamil Dudley (12.7) are not far behind. Austin also leads the boards with a 6.9 average per game.
