NMU informational forum

The second Northern Michigan University forum of the semester featured several topics important to students, faculty and the community.

NMU president David Haynes addressed the group.

His presentation included a review of an NMU branding study.

Several areas of campus had good reviews in the branding study: location, faculty and staff, size, atmosphere and depth of programs.

Issues that needed to be addressed included the public’s perception and reputation of NMU and academics.

Haynes said the next step in the process is to create a brand for the school.

That process will involve a marketing campaign, as well as new graphics and logos.

The forum today also included an update about a March 12th House hearing in Lansing at which the presidents of each Michigan Public 15 university testified.

State aid for universities will increase by 2% for fiscal 2014, which begins in October.

Haynes says the effects of the national sequester could also affect Northern for as long as 10 years, until Congress reaches its own target budget.
