NMU Hockey swept at Lake State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team continued its struggles on the road Saturday (Dec. 15) with a 3-1 loss at Lake Superior State University. The Wildcats are now 6-10-3 overall and 2-9-3-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. NMU is 0-7-1 in conference road games.

Sophomore defenseman Jake Baker scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at one late (18:19) in the first period on a delayed LSSU penalty. Senior defenseman Kyle Follmer assisted on the tally.

The Lakers got on the board 4:01 into the game with a power-play goal by Chris Ciotti. Matt Bruneteau scored the only goal of the second period with an even-strength tally 9:40 into the period. Nick McParland gave LSSU the 3-1 lead 5:44 into the final frame with a power-play goal.

Junior goaltender Jared Coreau had 34 saves in the game, stopping over 30 shots for the 10th time this season. Kevin Murdock had 24 saves for the home team.

The two teams combined for 65 penalty minutes. NMU was 0-for-7 on the power play while LSSU was 2-for-7.

Northern travels to St. Cloud State on the first weekend of the New Year for its final non-conference series.
