NMU golfer competes in tournament

SAUKVILLE, WIS. – Northern Michigan University golfer Mike Murphy finished sixth at the 112th Wisconsin State Amateur Championship on Thursday (July 25). He was six-over par at the four-day tournament held at The Bog in Saukville, Wis. The annual championship features 180 of the state’s top amateur golfers.

Murphy is a native of Madison, Wis. His home course is Maple Bluff Country Club.

“Congrats to Mike on an outstanding tournament last week,” NMU golf coach Dean Ellis said. “Finishing in the top six in the state of Wisconsin is an outstanding accomplishment and he represented NMU very well.”

Murphy opened the tournament with a two-under 70 in round one on Monday after recording six birdies. Tuesday he scored a 78. In round three on Wednesday, Murphy birdied four of five holes on the front nine and finished the day with a one-over 73. He birdied three of the last four holes in the final round on Thursday and scored a 73 for the
second day in a row.
