NMU Golf team wins U.P. Challenge

ELYRIA, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University men’s golf team defeated
Lake Superior State University four matches to one to win the 18-hole
Upper Peninsula Challenge Match Play Tournament at Elyria Country Club in
Elyria, Ohio on Friday (April 27).

“It’s great to get a win under our belt going in to the GLIAC Preview
tomorrow,” golf coach Dean Ellis said. “Our golfers have worked hard all
semester and earning a win this spring versus a U.P. rival will give our
program momentum going into the summer and looking forward to next fall.”

Sophomore Jared Reid and Ayrton Mantha led the way for the Wildcats,
defeating their opponents by five points with four holes to go. Reid
played against Doug Piesko and Mantha matched up with Justin Helmholdt.

Freshman Colten Thewis defeated Brandon Vizina four and three while
sophomore Mike Murphy defeated Sean Stubbs three and two.

Junior Adam Huss had the lone Wildcat loss to Andrew McKenney (2 and 1).

The ‘Cats wrap up the 2011-12 season on Saturday (April 28) with the GLIAC
Preview Tournament.
