NMU football schedule released

MARQUETTE, Mich.— An additional game and a rivalry matchup for homecoming highlight the 2014 Northern Michigan University football schedule which was released today.

“Our schedule is both a challenging and exciting one,” said NMU head coach Chris Ostrowsky. “We are thrilled to be playing an 11-game Division II schedule and have an exciting home schedule lined up including a homecoming game vs. rival Michigan Tech at the Superior Dome.”

The schedule will feature 10 matchups against  Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference foes as well as its 11th game versus Division II Quincy University. Quincy is a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and a regional opponent for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats kick off 2014 with their home opener against Northwood at 7 p.m. Sept. 6. That game will be Fan Appreciation/NMU Student Night. It will mark the 33rd meeting between the Wildcats and Timberwolves.

NMU then travels to Quincy on Sept. 13 as part of a two-year agreement that will see the QU Hawks come to Marquette in 2015. The ‘Cats continue on the road facing Hillsdale at 1 p.m. Sept. 20.

The following week’s homecoming is against Upper Peninsula rival Michigan Tech at 7 p.m. Sept. 27. NMU returns to the road to meet Saginaw Valley State at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 and Malone Oct. 11.

The Wildcats are then home for three of their last five games, facing Wayne State at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 during NMU Family Weekend and the 60th Annual Band Day.

Northern Michigan travels to Ashland on Oct. 25 and returns home for a matchup against Walsh at 1 p.m. on Nov. 1, during which a Veteran’s Day celebration will be held.

NMU’s final regular-season road trip is to Ferris State on Nov. 8. The season finale is at home versus Findlay at 1 p.m. Nov. 15 when the Wildcats will honor their departing seniors.

The 2014 Division II playoffs begin Nov. 22 and are capped by the national title game at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Mo., Dec. 20.
