Niagara Paper Mill Finally Sold

The former NewPage paper mill just across the state line from Iron Mountain has finally been sold.

NewPage has sold the Niagara mill to a local concern, Niagara Development LLC.

This may clear the way to the mill’s potential re-use.

The mill closed in 2008 after more than 100 years of operation, putting well over 300 people out of work.

More than half the mill’s employees lived in the U.P.

NewPage is paying the city of Niagara $100,000 per year through 2013 as compensation for the economic damage the closure caused.
