NewPage Pays for Closing Niagara Paper Mill

NewPage is paying Niagara, Wisconsin compensation for closing their paper mill last year.

The city received a $100,000 check last week.

And they’re expecting 4 more, 1 for each of the next 4 years.

The payments are the result of talks city officials had with NewPage executives about giving something back to the community.

The money is part of the re-use plan for the more than century-old paper mill.

It’s being set aside for economic development and job creation.

But there’s no immediate plan for spending it.

NewPage closed the Niagara mill 13 months ago.

It left 320 people out of work.

More than half of them lived on the U.P. side of the Michigan-Wisconsin line.
