New legislation to help domestic abuse victims

LANSING — Two Michigan representatives introduced legislation last week that gives more protection to victims of domestic abuse.

House Bills 5641 and 5642 would allow victims of domestic abuse to legally separate their cell phone plan from their abuser.

Representative Tom Barrett said it needs to be easier for domestic violence victims to completely remove themselves from the situation.

The bills are supported by domestic violence advocates like those at the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing as well as wireless providers like A-T and T.
