New Job Fair debuts in Hancock

For those looking for employment opportunities, a new job fair made its debut today in the Copper Country. ABC 10’s Keweenaw Bureau Reporter Sam Ali was there and he has our story.

The first ever Keweenaw Job Fair was held today at the Jutila Center in Hancock and the turnout was very positive. The event was organized by members of Finlandia University and Michigan Works. And all kinds of opportunities were available.

“I’m trying to stay up in the area this summer so I’m looking for a summer job. Something that will get me started so that I can get through next year in the school year, hoping to keep a job while I’m in school,” said Starr.

Employers spoke with interested job–seekers to find out what they were looking for. Brian Donnely from River Valley Bank says he is looking to take advantage of this chance to meet many people.

“There’s people here from all kinds of backgrounds, of all ages, of every walk of life. It’s a great opportunity to meet all sorts of different people and talk about where they want to go and see if there’s a fit between our bank and what they want to do with their lives,” Donnely said.

The event also held seminars on many things including how to write a resume and what to expect at an interview. Everything a prospect job–seeker wanted was available.

“I’m looking for an internship in the business management field. I’m also trying to gauge what these companies want as far as qualifications and skills in their employees,” Laban said.

And the main goal of this event is to make sure it can be an annual job fair for years to come.
