Ishpeming superintendent does the Ice Bucket Challenge, nominates Marquette County superintendents

The school year is right around the corner, and one Upper Peninsula school district has a new superintendent to start the year.

John Summerhill started his new position as Ishpeming’s superintendent in July.  Since then, he has been hard at work learning everything there is to know about the district and the community.

He said Ishpeming has deep roots that create a strong community.

“We’re looking to work together with the community, we’re looking to move forward and build on what we have here,” he said. “There’s enormous strength here, and I think my perspective is neat because its commonplace here. You see the loyalty, in particular, to this town. And just the beauty of it all, at the end of the day it is just wonderful to be here.”

Summerhill added his door is always open and welcomes comments or questions anyone has about his plans for the district.

At a town hall meeting Thursday, Summerhill participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and nominated the district’s administration and his fellow Marquette County superintendents to take part.

Summerhill’s Ice Bucket Challenge nominations:

Ishpeming School District Administration

  • Tony Bertucci
  • Vicki Lempinen
  • Dan Barry
  • Bernie Anderson

Marquette County superintendents

  • Dan Skewis (Negaunee)
  • Bryan DeAugustine (NICE)
  • Dru Milliron (Gwinn)
  • Bill Saunders (MAPS)

“It’s easy to watch it, it’s much harder and scarier to go through with it.  I’m glad I did it, and the people that I nominated, you have 24 hours!” Summerhill said.
