New gym works out more than just your muscles

MARQUETTE — When you think of working out, you typically think of lifting weights, running on the treadmill or working up a sweat on the StairMaster.

There’s a new gym concept out there today that’s all about working out one very important part of your body. A ‘Brain Gym’ is in the works in downtown Marquette.

This gym is all about what goes on between your ears. The concept behind the gym is from a company called ‘NeuroTrainer’. Their virtual reality software helps improve the cognitive function of athletes of all ages, all in the name of a better performance on the playing field.

“Wayne Gretzky dominated the world of hockey. He wasn’t the fastest and he wasn’t the biggest, but yet he dominated. Why? Because he saw more than the rest of the athletes,” said Jeff Nyquist, who founded NeuroTrainer. “He saw every player, he saw every play. He was famous for saying, ‘I don’t go to where the puck is, I go where the puck is going to be’. That’s the brain. We’re training that ability that’s no longer a God given gift, that’s a very trainable talent.”

Nyquist added that this state of the art technology could help athletes combat injuries before they happen.

“We believe that we have the first ever proactive solution for concussion management,” said Nyquist. “Concussions are a big problem. There are not a lot of solutions. We think we have a way of training athletes to see the danger before it happens and get away from that injury before it ever even happens.”

NeuroTrainer is in its infant stage. Nyquist is looking for funding to help take this company to the next level. If you would like to help, follow this link.
