New grocery store opens in Calumet

Residents in northern Houghton County have a new place to shop.  Louie’s Fresh Market opened their doors for the first time on Tuesday.

The anticipation for shoppers was so great, there was literally a line waiting to get in.

“I think it’s going to be great, because you can get your gas and your food and whatever hardware you might need all in one place,” Shane Crist from Hancock said.

Replacing the former Louie’s Super Foods in Calumet, the new store is nearly 50,000 square feet and comes complete with a hardware store, an eye care center, and an Old School Bakery.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Nick Meneguzzo, co-owner of Louie’s said.  “We’ve been working on it for about two years, and there’s a few things we’re looking at getting done yet in the store, but we literally couldn’t keep the customers out.  We had them coming into the store, we shut the power off and the electric doors, and they’d open the doors and come in.”
